Fiber Multiplexer

A fiber multiplexer (also known as fiber optic multiplexer or fibre mux) is a device used in fiber optic communication systems. It allows multiple optical signals to be combined and transmitted over a single fibre or to separate signals transmitted over a single fiber.

The main function of these devices is to use the existing fiber infrastructure more efficiently. Fiber optic cables provide high bandwidth, allowing the transmission of large amounts of data. However, when it is necessary to transmit or receive multiple signals over the same fiber, a fiber multiplexer is used.

This device can combine optical signals from different sources at the input and transmit them over a single output fiber. For example, a fiber multiplexer is used in a telecommunications network to transmit multiple phone calls or data streams over a single fiber. This enables more efficient use of network resources and increases the capacity of the fiber infrastructure.

There are two common types of fiber multiplexers: Wavelength Division Multiplexer (WDM) and Time Division Multiplexer (TDM).

Wavelength Division Multiplexer (WDM)

This type of multiplexer combines optical signals operating at different wavelengths and transmits them over a single fiber. WDM distinguishes and combines signals of different wavelengths. In this way, multiple data streams can be transmitted simultaneously and the fiber infrastructure can be used more efficiently.

WDM is generally divided into two subcategories, CWDM (Coarse WDM) and DWDM (Dense WDM).

What is TDM?

Time Division Multiplexer (TDM): TDM is a digital or analog communication process that divides signals from different sources into time slots and transmits these time slots over a single fiber. The signals are separated and combined according to the time slots and transmitted. This method combines signals from different sources through time sharing and enables multiple communications over the same physical infrastructure.

Usage Areas

Fiber multiplexers are widely used in telecommunication networks, data centers, broadcast industry and other fiber optic communication systems. Transmitting or splitting multiple signals over a single fiber increases the efficiency of communication systems and allows more data to be transmitted.
